Mission Refresh

There’s something disorienting about being busy. You know you’ve got a destination — but the days blur together, urgent things keep demanding attention, and before you know it, summer is over and you’re wondering whether you actually did the things that mattered most.

Pastor Josh White started the fall series with that honest observation, and it set the tone for everything that followed. As Grace Bible Church headed into a new season — with small groups firing back up, AWANA resuming, and life humming along — Josh called the congregation to stop and recalibrate. Not just to load up the calendar, but to remember why we do what we do.

The mission statement of GBC Phoenix reads: “Grace Bible Church is developing committed followers of Christ through the teaching and encouragement of God’s Word.” That’s the north star. But even north stars can get fuzzy when life gets loud. So Josh reframed it around three movements that he argued every healthy church — and every healthy Christian — should be marked by.

We Gather to Worship God

The first and most foundational posture of a church is worship. Not the songs only (though those too), but a whole-life orientation toward God. Josh broke this into three motivations:

Because of who He is. When your circumstances feel shaky, God’s character is the anchor. Josh pointed to Jeremiah 10:10-11 — where the Lord is described as the living God, the everlasting King, the one who made the earth by His power and established the world by His wisdom. He stretches out the heavens and brings forth wind from His storehouses. In a world of constantly shifting opinions and unstable leaders, God’s character doesn’t budge.

“But the Lord is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King. At His wrath the earth quakes, and the nations cannot endure His indignation.”

— Jeremiah 10:10

Because of what He’s done. Each one of us was redeemed — bought back from a state of separation and rebellion. Romans 5:1-11 describes this stunning reversal: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Ephesians 2:8-10 reinforces that this salvation comes by grace through faith, not by our works — it’s a gift. And Colossians 1:15-23 explains that Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation, and the one who holds everything together.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

— Ephesians 2:8-9

Because of what He promises. This life isn’t all there is. Philippians 1:3-6 says God will carry to completion the good work He started in us. Jesus told His disciples in John 14:3 that He’s going to prepare a place and will come back to bring them — and us — to be with Him. Colossians 3:1-4 promises that when Christ appears, we will also appear with Him in glory. We Gather, in part, to rehearse that future and invest in it.

We Gather to Edify and Teach Each Other

Worship alone isn’t the full picture. A committed follower of Christ also grows in community — not just individually, but as part of the body. Ephesians 4 describes this as the corporate maturation of believers “growing up into Christ” together, building one another up in love.

Josh referenced 2 Timothy 2:2 — the principle of discipleship multiplication: what Timothy learned from Paul, he was to entrust to reliable people qualified to teach others. And 2 Timothy 3:16 frames Scripture itself as useful for teaching, correcting, rebuking, and training in righteousness. The gathering of believers isn’t passive — it’s a place where knowledge deepens, hearts get redirected, and people spur one another on toward love and good deeds.

“Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not abandoning our own assembling together, as the habit of some is, but encouraging one another.”

— Hebrews 10:24-25

We Gather to Share the Gospel

The third movement pushes outward. Josh anchored this in 2 Corinthians 5:17-20: if anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation; the old has passed away. And that means we are Christ’s ambassadors — as though God were making an appeal through us to the world.

“Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making His appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.”

— 2 Corinthians 5:20

Sharing the gospel happens two ways. With words — knowing how to communicate that Christ came to live the life we couldn’t, die the death we deserved, and rise again to offer us righteousness. Colossians 4:2-6 calls this being wise in how we act toward outsiders, making the most of every opportunity, letting our conversation be full of grace, seasoned with salt. With actions — 1 Peter 2:11-17 says we are to live so differently that even those who don’t agree with us have nothing bad to say about us. They may not like us, but they’re grateful we’re here — opening our homes, serving the neighborhood, being good neighbors.

Josh put it bluntly: a church that only worships and builds itself up, without an eye on those outside, becomes “a big pile of stinking manure” (to use his vivid illustration). Not because the people are bad, but because the mission went dormant.

So What?

This series isn’t just a refresher for the mind — it’s a recalibration for the calendar. When we Gather to worship, we’re reminding ourselves that God is the audience, not us. When we Gather to teach, we’re admitting we need each other to grow. When we Gather to share the gospel, we’re confessing that the mission of the church is bigger than any one of us.

The question for each of us this fall isn’t “What programs are available?” It’s “Am I living out these three movements — worshiping, growing, and mission — with my Monday through Saturday life? Am I a committed follower of Christ, not just an attendee?”

Over the coming weeks, GBC Phoenix will be exploring the church’s core values — Bible-centered, making disciples, faithful service, and healthy relationships — as the practical outworking of this mission. Join the journey.
