Keep On Keeping On

There’s a phrase we throw around a lot in Christian circles — “keep on keeping on.” It sounds spiritual. It looks good on a coffee mug. But do we really understand what it means to endure in the faith, especially when the heat is turned up?

Brent Befus opened his message with a lighthearted observation: it’s that time of year in Phoenix when we all question why we live here. But he quickly moved to something deeper. Just as we endure physical heat, God calls us to endure spiritually — and that endurance isn’t optional.

Persecution Is Part of the Package

Paul doesn’t soft-pedal the Christian life for Timothy. In 2 Timothy 3:12, Paul writes plainly: “Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.”

“Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.”

— 2 Timothy 3:12

That’s not encouragement — that’s a warning. If you’re living for Christ, opposition will come. The world, the flesh, and the devil are not neutral forces. Paul knew this from personal experience — Antioch, Iconium, Lystra — he lists the cities where he suffered. And he wasn’t unique. Every faithful follower of Jesus will face pressure.

But here’s where many believers get stuck. They think: “If I’m being persecuted, something must be wrong.” No. That assumption is backwards. It’s a mark of faithfulness, not a sign of failure.

Timothy Had an Advantage — and So Do You

Timothy grew up watching Paul. He saw the victories and the failures. He learned what it looked like to suffer well and what it looked like to trust God when everything was falling apart. Paul writes in verse 14: “Continue in what you have learned and firmly believed.”

“Continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it.”

— 2 Timothy 3:14

Paul is telling Timothy: you have everything you need. You have the teaching. You have my example. You have the Scripture — which is “able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.”

That’s not just nice language. It’s the foundation of everything. The Bible isn’t a suggestion box. It’s not a self-help book. It’s God-breathed — every word, every page, every story pointing us to Christ and training us in righteousness.

All Scripture Is Breathed Out by God

Paul doubles down in verse 16: “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.”

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.”

— 2 Timothy 3:16

That’s four things Scripture does: it teaches us what is true, rebukes us when we drift, corrects us when we’re wrong, and trains us to be more like Jesus. This isn’t a buffet where we pick what we like and ignore the rest. Every page has purpose. Every verse has power.

But here’s the danger: we can know the right things and still live like strangers to them. We can memorize Romans 8:28 and still panic in trials. We can quote “by grace through faith” and still try to earn God’s approval. Paul knows this. That’s why he doesn’t just tell Timothy to believe the right things — he tells him to continue in them.

Keep On Keeping On

The message isn’t complicated, but it’s convicting. Faithfulness isn’t a one-time decision. It’s a daily choice to return to what you’ve learned, to sit under faithful teaching, and to let Scripture do its work in you — even when your life doesn’t match up yet.

Paul reminds Timothy (and us): don’t think you have to figure everything out on your own. You have the deposit. You have the model. You have the Word. Stay in it. Let it change you. And when you fail — because you will — run back to the one who is faithful to cleanse you.

“Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.”

— 2 Timothy 4:2

That’s the call: be faithful with what you’ve been given. Keep teaching. Keep learning. Keep growing. Keep getting back up.

Keep on keeping on — not because you’re strong enough, but because the One who holds you is.
