Only the Worthy.

What does it really mean to be “worthy”? And more importantly—could you ever actually become worthy? This sermon digs deep into what the Bible teaches about our worthiness before God.

Baseball Hall of Fame: A Powerful Analogy

Pastor Josh White begins with a striking comparison: the Baseball Hall of Fame. Out of 2,787 Major League Baseball players in history, only 278—about 1.3%—have been deemed worthy of induction. The standards are incredibly high: playing ability, character, sportsmanship, and contributions to the game.

Then he shifts gears. There’s another group far more prestigious than any Hall of Fame—the group of people who will inherit God’s Kingdom. And the requirements? Perfect obedience. Complete holiness. Absolute righteousness.

Here’s the problem: Romans 3:10 tells us “none is righteous, no not one.” We’ve all fallen short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). No one qualifies on their own.

Our Position: Worthy Through Faith in Christ

But here’s the good news. Paul writes in 2 Thessalonians 1:5 that believers are “counted worthy” of the Kingdom of God. How? Not because of anything we’ve done, but because of what Christ has done for us.

“God chooses to credit the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ to anyone who puts their faith in Him—and in God’s eyes, they become worthy of the future Eternal Kingdom of God.”

This is justification. First, our sins are paid for—Christ died as the propitiation for our sins, satisfying God’s wrath. Second, Christ’s perfect righteousness is credited to us. We get what we don’t deserve. That’s grace (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Because of this, we become co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:16-17). We are transferred from the domain of darkness into the Kingdom of His Son (Colossians 1:12-14).

Our Responsibility: Live Worthy

Paul doesn’t stop there. In Colossians 1:9-10, he prays that believers would “walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him, bearing fruit in every good work.”

In 1 Thessalonians 2:11-12, he charges us: “walk in a manner worthy of God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.”

So here’s the question: Since God has called you into His Kingdom, do you walk worthy?

Five Ways to Walk Worthy (Ephesians 4)

Paul gives five specific ways we demonstrate worthiness in our daily lives:

  • Humility – Consider how undeserving we are of God’s grace
  • Gentleness – Treat others with kindness and care
  • Patience – Bear with one another in love
  • Unity – Eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit
  • Peace – Live in the bond of peace

Being counted worthy of God’s Kingdom isn’t the end of the story—it’s the beginning of a new way of living. Because of what Christ has done for us, we are now called to live worthy of that calling.

Conclusion

You are worthy—not because of your works, but because of your faith in Christ. Now live like it. Walk worthy of the calling to which you have been called.
