amen well good morning everyone happy mother’s day to all the mothers in our church and all the mothers out there watching this online this is this is so bizarre 2020 has been
Section 6
so unusual not only did we have a virtually empty sanctuary for easter but now mother’s day one of the two or three most um important sundays or at least the most attended sundays of the year
and our sanctuary is is practically empty so such a bizarre thing but today i’m extremely excited to be able to announce to you that i actually have an announcement to make
we’ve been kind of saying there’s not really many announcements but now we actually have an announcement to make and that announcement is the board has met and we decided we do have a plan for when we are going to reopen and have
in-person worship services and that will be the year 2025. no i’m just kidding it’s actually going to be if i can get to the slide it’s going to be sunday
Section 7
may 31st there we go sunday may 31st is our plan for when we are going to reopen our worship services for for in-person worship that’s three sundays from today you’re
watching this we’re watching this on mother’s day and so next sunday will be may 17th the following sunday is going to be memorial day sunday memorial day weekend and so we’re waiting until the sunday after memorial day now some
of you are thinking wait a second i haven’t heard anything on the news that churches are allowed to meet yet do we actually have the authority and the right to meet that’s a very interesting subject
a lot of churches in arizona over the last couple weeks have found out that technically we probably never needed to stop meeting in the first place we are going to be emailing out to the entire church a couple important
Section 8
documents just so you can see this but the attorney general of arizona just gave an opinion on churches and whether they commute or not and churches here in arizona are essential
we are essential and so we do not need to technically stop meeting now that being said um if our church would have known this seven or eight weeks ago we probably would have made the same decision we
probably would have said this coronavirus we don’t know what’s going on let’s go ahead and just have online services anyway i don’t think that we regret what we did but we do have the right the legal right
to meet and so we are going to do that but it’s going to be a little bit different for a while all right our sundays are going to be a little bit different like for instance
Section 9
our sundays are going to be um just the worship service so may 31st we will only have the 10 30 a.m worship service and this is i don’t we don’t know how long this is going to go the board and the staff will be talking
about this probably on a weekly basis but this could go possibly through the month of june all right only the 10 30 a.m worship service that means that we will not be having sunday school
we will not be having nursery provided and we will not have children’s church or any of those children’s ministries and so families will need to stay together and watch themselves during the worship service okay we don’t know
exactly when we’ll start all those up of course we’ll be in contact as soon as we make those decisions however it’s going to be a little bit different we’re going my clicker is really slow today um we are going to have everything in the
Section 10
worship center you can be here and attend in the worship center but we’re also going to open up the multi-purpose center we’re going to spread everything out put up a whole bunch of tables we’ll have a video projector in there it’ll be
live streamed in the multi-purpose center so for people who want to just spread out and make sure that they have enough space you can be in the worship center or you can be in the multi-purpose center and we will have
some activities for kids to do so um families you can sit wherever you want but for a family with young kids maybe in the multi-purpose center it might be really nice you can sit there at the tables and the kids can have things to
do and some activities and so we’re going to do this for a while it’ll be very interesting um kind of kind of like this these last eight weeks have been very interesting now you’re thinking wait a second if we
Section 11
can meet why are we waiting then for the 31st why don’t we just meet right away well the reason why we have decided as a board to wait until the 31st is more of a
practical issue right now than anything else and those issues are we are currently redoing our sound booth we’re making progress obviously you can’t see it we’re making progress every
week but it should be done by may 31st and then maybe even more importantly memorial day is only two sundays away and so what i didn’t want to do is to have us all show up and the board didn’t want us all to show up on the 17th with
some construction going on and then from a production standpoint on memorial day take a big step back and then kind of you go to the 31st and so we just said we’re this close to memorial day let’s just make sure we
Section 12
just do these next couple services and then after memorial day is done then we will meet again okay so this is our plan if the plan changes if anything we would push the services back further into june
i don’t foresee that happening if something crazy happens in uh in the country a spike in cases or whatever but we will definitely not be meeting sooner than the 31st now with that being said i know some of you are
listening this and you’re saying finally i cannot wait to go and be with my church family and worship with them and some of you are saying yeah i don’t know i i don’t know i’m still a little bit nervous and let me
let me tell you if you do not feel comfortable meeting in person that’s fine we will continue to have these live stream services on facebook and they’ll be posted on youtube and this is going
Section 13
to be like indefinitely all right we’re always going to be have live facebook streaming services and they’ll be posted on youtube so if you are not comfortable yet or if you feel that maybe um you’re part
of that vulnerable population and you’re not wanting to expose yourself potentially then stay at home until you are ready and i emphasize until you are ready because it’s important for us at some point to be back together but if
you’re not ready on the 31st that’s fine okay things are going to be a little bit different for a while as you can imagine so i ask for you to pray for the board and the staff
tomorrow on monday we will be meeting and what we’re going to be talking about is a lot of the little differences in the the new temporary policies that we’re going to have to create in order to do church just differently for this
Section 14
next month or so this kind of reminds me a little bit of when we moved from union hills here to 12th street we knew that there were going to be some changes and and we didn’t quite know all the changes that
there were going to be so i remember i preached a couple sermons on unity and today i’m still preaching on unity from philippians but i asked everyone just to bear with each other be patient and be supportive of of the people in our
church and i ask you to do that especially as we get back together people are might be uneasy for a little while but we are a church we are united and we exist
to promote and to praise our lord and savior jesus christ and so this is definitely a time for us to be united all right but someday soon church is going to look like this and i am excited and not exactly like that i
Section 15
don’t know who those people are i found that that image on google but those look like nice people i wouldn’t mind if they come here but um we will be having church again on the 31st i’m looking forward to that
again i want us to all be sensitive and very um loving and caring of each other because as we know in the world today there are there’s a massive amount of opinions and so let’s make sure that we’re supporting encouraging each other
okay all right well speaking of doing all things in love when i say the word love who is the first person that comes to your mind when you hear the word love
mom someone said jesus i guess technically that’s the correct answer but today is mother’s day when we think of a loving person we typically think of mom and so today
Section 16
as i’m about to get into the sermon what i want to do is take just a minute and i have an encouraging and inspiring hopefully funny mother’s day video for you so let’s go
ahead and let’s take a look at that video right now guide me in your truth don’t forget your lunches it’s like 50 days of not knowing love you
you love me too guide me in your truth and teach me for you hello hey for lunch oh buddy can i get a protein box and a grande
iced americano please double shot hey guys how was school are you still in your pajamas this is math now honey
Section 17
do you know him you need a bath tomorrow guide me in your truth and teach me for you are god my savior and my hope is in you all day long
well last week for the sermon i had mentioned that the passage i was using i wish i could have saved it for a more specific purpose or a specific occasion well this week’s passage is awesome for
mother’s day i’m really glad that it worked out this way when you think of a mom what words come to mind what adjectives how would you describe them all in fact because we’re only going to have just a couple more
weeks of doing this through facebook i want you to actually write in the comments because your comments will be live all right so when you think of a mother what kind of attributes do you think about why don’t you go
Section 18
ahead and write those in the comments some of you might write moms are loving you might write moms are kind you might write moms scream a lot
especially during the quarantine or my mom is an excellent marksman she can throw a shoe around a corner like a ninja you know what whatever it is write down what you think about a mom but i’m hoping that someone wrote down
that they thought moms were unselfish and even if you didn’t write that down you’re probably thinking yeah a good-hearted woman a good mom is unselfish
because basically in order to raise a human being from birth and to keep that human alive the other humans need to be unselfish and a mother’s unselfishness and of
Section 19
course a father too is because she is putting her knee the needs of her child before her own listen selfishness will break up relationships whether that’s in a family selfishness
in a family selfishness at work selfishness at church but unselfishness it brings people together well right now we are continuing in our series on philippians chapter 2 and we’ve looked at the first couple verses
we spent a few weeks talking about that and in this passage paul is talking about unity and the things that we need to do to be united as believers and he first talked about the motivations the motivations that god
supplies us with in order to pursue unity and last week what we did is we talked about kind of the mental aspect or the mental adjustments that we need to make in order to be united with each other and we need to adjust our thoughts
Section 20
we need to be thinking the same thing and that’s not necessarily theological but we have the same plan right we also need to adjust our passions and adjust our purpose make our passions what god’s passionate
about our purpose what god’s purpose is today is the next section and it’s about the actions that we need to take in order to have unity and so our passage for today is philippians 2
verses 3 and 4. and that passage says do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit but in humility count others more
significant than yourselves let each of you look not only to his own interests but also to the interests of others now in this passage we see five actions in this passage we see two do nots and three things that we’re
Section 21
supposed to do but for this morning we’re going to look at the do nots and the first do not in here is to be selfish do not be selfish do not do anything from selfish ambition
that’s kind of obvious when it comes to unity as soon as you have somebody who was doing what they want to do even over and above what other people that what is in their best interest you’re going to destroy unity
in fact when you look at the bible you realize it teaches us that selfishness at its core is the root of all the other sins that this is the reason why lucifer fell and he lost his position in in heaven
we find that in isaiah isaiah 14 talks about the fall of lucifer the fall of satan and it’s because of the pride which is ultimately selfishness that he had in his heart isaiah 14 12 begins it says
Section 22
how you are fallen from heaven o day star son of dawn this is lucifer how you are cut down to the ground you who laid the nations low you said in your heart i will ascend to heaven above the stars
of god i will set my throne on high i will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north i will ascend above the heights of the clouds i will make myself
like the most high lucifer had allowed his heart and his mind to be corrupted by selfishness he was thinking about himself over and above anyone and anything else
including including his creator the father so as soon as lucifer allowed himself to become selfish it destroyed the unity that he had with god the father and he will never have that again
Section 23
and for us selfishness at its heart is sin and so god tells us here in philippians do nothing from selfishness because when we do what
we do is we’re driving a wedge between ourselves and others and not only doing selfish activities but when we think about and we become selfish whether we’re actually doing those or not it affects our heart
now the the greek word for selfishness is a great word i’m going to tell you a little bit about the history the greek word is arithea and originally this word has a really interesting background it originally meant someone who was a day
laborer you think how did it go from being a day laborer to selfishness i’m not exactly sure how but eventually what happened is this word eventually began to be described to describe someone who persistently
Section 24
sought out their own personal advantage and gain regardless of how it affected others and that’s essentially what selfishness all right when you’re looking up for your own advantage and you do not care
how it affects other people especially in a negative way a good example of this is black friday shopping friday after thanksgiving people are like i’m gonna get my christmas presents
and i have to trample over some old lady i don’t care i want what i want and that’s selfishness you know listen i think in many ways for any human being for them to to um to have a better life you know to
to to lift their life to improve their life is very respectable and commendable and when someone tries to improve their life by making someone else’s life worse that is selfishness you know i was trying to think of a good way to
Section 25
understand the significance of selfishness and what this means and i kind of came up with a kind of a an illustration hopefully this makes sense
selfishness is like working in a closed system and what i mean by that is you’re working in an environment that has a limited amount of resources all right a good example of this would be playing poker now i’m not
a poker player myself and even if i was i probably would wouldn’t bet with money because i’m too cheap to do that uh but when poker and and i i don’t want to describe poker very well because very
much because i don’t play it and so i might get some of this wrong but let’s just imagine a group of guys they go over to some guy’s basement on a saturday night and there’s four guys that are playing poker and they all
Section 26
bring a hundred dollars well the goal is for one person to win all the money and the other three to go home broke now listen in order for someone else to improve their position someone else’s has to
get worse that’s the kind of selfishness that this word means that i gain something only because you lose something that’s what selfish ambition means in the real world in the world where god lives the
nice thing is everyone has a chance to make their life better there’s enough good to go around for everyone there’s enough graciousness to go around for everyone so
what we should do instead of thinking of selfish ambition like poker we should think of our lives like ships in a harbor maybe you’ve heard the phrase in a harbor all the ships rise together
Section 27
and they fall together and there’s nothing wrong with wanting your ship to rise with the tide but it’s even better when you want all the ships around you to rise with the tide as well there’s enough grace for
all of us to experience that lift in life and so this selfishness that paul is telling us to not have do nothing on a selfish ambition it’s like playing poker do not think of yourself as someone that needs
to gain and only gain because someone else is being negatively affected now interestingly about this word this greek word area thea was often used to describe this is not going to be a surprise i
think to many of you it’s you also used to describe someone who is pursuing political office for self-serving purposes i know shocker huh right has that ever happened in the history of
Section 28
mankind someone runs for political office because not because they want to bless and serve the people because they want certain things and if they’re in a position of power then they can make sure that they
get those things and so that’s what that’s this word means someone who’s pursuing power for their own benefit to the detriment of others and so the selfishness when someone has it in their heart it
can grow it can escalate and ultimately it can consume someone now as i’m describing this and we’re spending quite a bit of time talking about selfishness or self-centeredness
or any of you thinking of someone you might be thinking yeah i know so this describes so and so really really well i wish i wish they’re listen i hope they’re listening to this sermon or maybe maybe they need to
Section 29
listen to the sermon or some of you might be thinking you know if i’m honest with myself that’s kind of describing me when someone becomes consumed with selfishness they are the ones who
ultimately are harmed the most by it now in the bible we have many examples of sin many bad examples many examples of selfishness and there’s there’s one church i’m so glad that um we have all these
different letters but there’s one church in particular that seems to be the best bad example and that’s the church in corinth in fact paul wrote to corinth we have two large two of the largest new
testament epistles or to corinth and we know that that’s probably second and fourth corinthians so paul had a lot to write to the corinthians because they were immature they were selfish in fact someday when we’re in glory with all the
Section 30
saints that came before us we might meet somebody from corinth and go oh so you were from corinth yeah your church had a lot messed up with it but in first corinthians chapter one paul is talking to them about their
selfishness they were selfish what they were doing is they were going around saying well i’m i’m a i’m a follower i’m a disciple of apollos and i follow paul i follow christ and instead of realizing that
they’re all on the same team and they’re they’re they’re doing ministry to support jesus christ they were forming clicks so that they could make make themselves be over and above other people so this is what paul says to them
first corinthians 1 10 it says i appeal to you brothers by the name of our lord jesus christ that all of you agree and that there be no divisions among you but that you are united
Section 31
in the same mind and the same judgment for it has been reported to me by chloe’s people that there is quarreling among you my brothers why was there quarreling
because there was selfishness they were thinking of themselves and so you go ahead to chapter three verses one through three paul continues and he says to them brothers but i brothers could not
address you as spiritual people but as people of the flesh as infants in christ i fed you with milk not solid food for you were not ready for it and even now you are not ready for you are still of the flesh
for while there is jealousy and strife among you are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way and so you know the interesting thing
Section 32
about that is the men that they were associating themselves with saying they were their followers of paul and apollos and peter and and jesus all of those men they were definitely worthy of respect but their motives for arguing about all
this was selfish if they really wanted to proclaim the gospel of jesus christ they should not have turned this into a childish argument to put themselves over each other you know i have a kind of an
illustration for selfishness maybe in the modern day you know today is is mother’s day and usually when there are young children in the house the young children might make a present or a mother’s day
gift for their moms now because no kids have been in school for the last you know several weeks maybe that’s sometimes when they make something for their mother’s day mother’s day presents but sometimes let’s say a mom has
Section 33
several kids or a couple a few a few different kids and they give a gift to their mom their motives are they might be different some child might give a gift to their mother because they want their mother to
know how much they love them but you know that there’s going to be some kids out there who are giving a gift to their mom because they want their mom to acknowledge that their gift is better
than the gift that their brother gave to her right it’s selfishness i want mom to see me as important but only if my brother is seen as unimportant this is the kind of selfishness
that destroys unity this is the kind of mindset that destroys unity so that’s why paul says do nothing from selfish ambition you know we have been in quarantine we
Section 34
have been in a different world these last seven eight nine weeks have you noticed as your emotions have been in turmoil and upheaval and anxiety and fear have you noticed yourself becoming a little bit more selfish
like i just i gotta get that fixed i gotta get that thing that’s going to make me happy i’ve got to do this i’ve got a zona or whatever whatever it is and you you become selfish it’s like in times of of unrest we become we kind of
revert to our animal instincts to some extent you know god gave us the holy spirit and we need to be spirit-led and so the first action that we do not take in order to help create unity is
selfishness okay that’s the first one the second one is this do not be conceited do not be conceited the verse for that is verse 3.
Section 35
it says do nothing from selfish ambition conceit but in humility count others more significant than yourselves now the king james version i like that translation of
the word conceit they translate this vain glory and the greek word is canodoxia and you might think wait a second that kind of sounds familiar it’s a compound word on the end of that word doxia is
the word for glory and so that’s why the king james version translates this vainglory the word canardoxia means vainglory or empty pride and empty is a really important word there it’s empty something else that’s really interesting
about the word glory now when we use when you use the word glory what are you usually describing usually something beautiful right glory usually is meant to describe something that’s light and beautiful
Section 36
like a sunset or a really picturesque scene a meadow or a mountain that’s oh you say that’s glorious that’s beautiful or maybe if you live in the northern states you see the fresh snow falling snow out the picture window
you know and you got your cup of coffee oh that is glorious that is absolutely beautiful well the hebrew word for glory is the the hebrew word kabode and it translates to glory into english
but the root of that hebrew word has the meaning of weight or heaviness to it it’s kind of really interesting that glory means has a weightiness or a heft or a theft
or a density to it it is it’s heavier than other things a great verse that kind of describes what glory means is second corinthians 4 17. this is this is such an awesome verse it says this
Section 37
for this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison
did you notice it says that our light afflictions compared to the weight of glory are not worth comparing and so what we’re experiencing today this quarantine cova 19 all this frustration that we’re
experiencing these afflictions they’re light they’re they’re hollow they don’t have any heft or density to them compared to the weight and the density and the heftiness of the eternal glory that we
are going to be experiencing now some of you might say wow i like that idea of glory this the idea of of heftiness and weight maybe i can use that to describe myself after the quarantine right we’ve all kind of added
Section 38
a little heft and weightiness to ourselves right and so when you see somebody you can say hey i’m just a little bit more glorious today than i was before or you can say that to somebody else but
don’t say to anyone from our church because they they’ll know what you’re saying all right but you know if we could equate one pound with one um glory unit then we can you know
i’m five glory units more than i i used to be now that i want to give a public service announcement remember we’re meeting again in three weeks and so you have three weeks to get your hair cut
to shave i’m gonna shave this thing off before we meet again and you also have three weeks to drop your glory points okay so you are left glorious then than you are today
Section 39
but this word glory vainglory is focused on a person’s value and specifically how they attribute that value to themselves conceit or vainglory is when someone thinks that they are heftier
and weightier and more important than they really are but this specific word vainglory deals with the fact that a person’s mass or their weightiness their glory
it’s hollow it doesn’t exist everyone is the same and the truth is if someone imagines themselves to be this one thousand pound heavy boulder i’m an important person ultimately what they are
is a painted piece of styrofoam just like the rest of us they’re just trying to make themselves look heavier and more important than they truly are you know a really interesting thought on
Section 40
both of these words paul says do nothing out of selfishness or conceit he has these two concepts and i think these are big concepts and i think he nailed it these two are traps that we all fall into all the time and
we can we can probably summarize and say that of all the things that people want it kind of falls into one of these two categories either either selfishness or glory or vain glory or conceit and another way to put that a more
specific concrete way to put that is when most people become selfish and conceited what they are ultimately wanting are riches or fame
because riches goes right along with selfishness and fame goes right along with conceit we either want stuff so that we can compare ourselves with others and say you know what i have more
Section 41
stuff than you or my stuff is more expensive than your stuff that’s selfishness all right and to get more stuff for myself i have to make sure that you don’t get as much stuff or we want fame
and fame is when we get other people to think of us as more important than we truly are now what i want to do and i want you to humor me all right because this comment section on facebook live is is um we’re not going to be using this
as much anymore so what i want you to do have a little bit of fun with this but what i want you to do if you’re willing to do this this is kind of a group therapy session right now i want you to write down which of these two you would
rather have now imagine that you’re going to use them for good okay to benefit others imagine that god comes to you and says just like with king solomon i will grant you whatever you ask for but it has to be one of two
Section 42
things riches or fame which are you more likely to want okay so write that down just put that in the comments
and uh let’s have some fun with it and of course we know because you love jesus you’ll use your fame for god’s glory and your riches for god’s glory but i i’m going to go out on a limb and say that generally speaking there’s
obviously always exceptions to this rule but generally speaking men would probably lean towards the wealth and women would probably lean towards the fame and the influence
money gives us the power to make things happen and guys women too but guys they want that power i have money i can make things happen fame is when you have the ability to
Section 43
influence others to make things happen that you want to have happen kind of a slight difference there men don’t care as much what you think about them they just want the power to do what they want but women they can fall into
that trap of wanting people to love them and adore them and think highly of them and of course men can want fame and women can want wealth but as a general rule i think maybe there’s some
truth to that and these are big traps that all of us fall into and so that’s why paul says if you want unity you’re going to have to do nothing out of selfish ambition
nothing out of selfish ambition and if you want unity you’re not going to have vainglory you cannot think that you are weightier and more glorious than any other person both are divisive both will destroy
Section 44
unity and so that’s why paul says do nothing from selfishness or conceit and that’s our mother’s day sermon for today sorry this kind of turned into
kind of a downer of a sermon but um what i hope all of us realize is the opposite is true of of of a good mother a mother a good mother is an example of someone who is unselfish and someone who is not worried about how
other people see herself but she is she’s wanting to give glory and honor to others especially to her children well fortunately paul doesn’t just tell us what we are not supposed to do he also goes on to
tell us three things that we are supposed to do however you’re gonna have to tune in next sunday to find out what those three are we’re gonna talk about those but until then don’t be selfish
Section 45
don’t be conceited and if you can get those two right then you will live happily ever after and have all the friends that you want that’s i know it’s not that easy but i tell you i i love preaching the
word of god and it’s so wonderful that we can read god’s word and it be inspiring to us and convicting when it needs to be and so today i encourage you as you’re sitting here and you’re thinking about what god’s telling us to
not do to achieve unity check the condition of your heart analyze truly analyze your motives consider what your desire is for other people do you want other people to
flourish and be blessed because you want to rejoice with others you want to rejoice with those who rejoice or do you want them to fail because if they fail you think that it might make you look a little bit better
Section 46
well unity happens when we become each other’s biggest fans and so what i want to do is i want to close with one of my all-time favorite verses and this is from ephesians 4 29 i’ve quoted this many many times but
this time i’m going to read it from the new living translation ephesians 4 29 says don’t use foul or abusive language let everything you say be good and helpful
so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them good advice we need to take this to heart moms you are the best we love you thank you
for your unselfishness thank you for pouring your lives into your kids and today moms i hope you enjoy your day as much as you can again it’s a bummer that restaurants open tomorrow so enjoy your
Section 47
